Excerpts

summer love

Let the sun take a break

and have its light shine on me

So my skin can turn golden and my eyes turn brown

Let me dance in the natural light

With my natural beauty.

hard work pays off

Am I really that disappointing?

that my success was such a shock

are you so used to seeing a failure?

that you forgot how to  be a human

was I that much of a joke,

a disappointment?

all of this for a life I already know-

you live and die

so why can’t I live in a way that doesn’t make me want to die?

can I fail and get back up again?

can I not understand something without shame?

can I look out of place without a snarky comment?

can I try something new with my hair and not want to hide it?

can i struggle?

can i cry?

can i not be compared?

can i look tired?

can i be a human?

the little girl sits on the field of sea grass and rose petals

she stares at the vibrant stars plastered on the dark sky

she lays in peace

I had a dream

that I was 10 I played with dolls and I braided hair

that I ran throughout the green fields

that I was royalty

I wear ball gowns and tiaras

High heels and stockings

Dancing in large ballrooms

Holding onto my dreams

My partner is my Barbie doll

and my child is my build a bear

Oh, how I’d like to be in the ballroom again.
