Sometimes it feels like we are stuck on autopilot; there is always something more to do, something else to study, another job that needs to be done. Burnout is a state of emotional exhaustion, personal detachment, and reduced efficiency. If you have been feeling or experiencing any of these things, it is normal, and there is a way out.

Prioritize Rest Without Guilt

Listen to your body, listen to your heart, and listen to your mind. Take the rest when your body asks for it; there is nothing wrong with taking a break and stepping back. Rest isn’t only sleeping, but also taking time for yourself by meditating, napping, listening to music, exercising, and more, whatever makes you feel rested and refreshed.

Redefining Productivity

I entered college trying to do everything, and I became overwhelmed, stressed, and burned out. I needed to fill my schedule to be productive, but I learned that I can feel fulfilled on my own terms. No one but yourself can establish your feeling of productivity. Find your own level of content and follow that path; no one else’s path is yours, and your path doesn’t belong to anyone but you.

Reignite Joy and Purpose

  • Find small hobbies that make you feel happy

  • Reconnect/find your community where you feel supported

  • Remind yourself of your goals and the purpose of each task you are completing

Conclusion

Remember, burnout is typical; it doesn’t mean you're a “failure” or “less than”. It means taking the time to focus on yourself and reset your mind, heart, and body. I know that sometimes, when you look at your peers and it feels as though they are doing everything, it can be disheartening. However, we all have different boundaries and limits. All that matters is that you understand what you need and you create your own limits and goals to follow to maintain your needs.
